Once upon a time, a Warrior of Light (now turned Warrior of Darkness) was hanging out with her friends in /gpose. Though she thoroughly enjoyed taking screenshots, there was always one thing that held her back: Posing others. “If only there was a single location in which I could visit to see what the various emotes look like on any given race and gender…” she thought to herself. And thus, the idea of Aetherflow Media was born.
I can see that look of confusion on your face! How does this question lead to the development of a massive digital magazine and media package? Well, my dears, that’s a long story, and one I am happy to share!
Back in the summer of 2018, I had this idea of creating a site that showed video clips of all of the emotes in every position on each race and gender. My hope for this site was to help those who were interested in screenshots but struggled with the posing of others, much like I did due to my unfamiliarity of how emotes look on a race/gender other than my own. This site was to become the one-stop spot for posing inspiration! But I knew I couldn’t tackle this project completely on my own.
Thankfully, I had Arya to reach out to! After much discussion of my goal, she expressed a desire for creating and publishing Photoshop tutorials. These tutorials would certainly pair great with my videos, so the idea of teaming up became a reality. A few friends we had made throughout our XIV life learned about our plans and volunteered to help in any way that they could. The more that wanted to join, the larger our vision became. Eventually, we realized that this project was no longer contained to just / gpose and Photoshop tutorials, but had begun to encompass just about every aspect of the game and community. We had friends wanting to express their creativity through layouts, glamour, housing, podcasting and so much more! “Why not find a way to combine all of our interests and share our passions with the community?” we asked ourselves. There are already so many different content creations out there and we didn’t want to just be another little fish in the big pond, so the concern became how to set ourselves apart while still maintaining our own identity.
In the development of content creations, there are a lot of different questions to be answered and decisions that must be made. What was our goal for this new project? What would it be called? What would it even be? Who should our target audience be? When do we want to launch publicly?
These and so many more questions raced through our minds and consumed our discussions over the following days. Slowly but surely, the various pieces of our visions came together. We didn’t want to be just an emotes project, or just a podcast, or just a collection of tutorials. We wanted to be a full media package, one that covers all the aspects of the game and community. Now that what our content would be had been decided, it needed a name.
Arya, the genius that she is, began to brainstorm and brought forth the idea that Aether is the life force of Eorzea and is allencompassing. As we wanted to eventually help breathe life into the community and become an all-encompassing project thus the name Aetherflow Media stuck out. This, admittedly, totally blew my idea of Carbuncle Chronicles out of the water! Here she was, getting all deep and philosophical on me and I just wanted to include the adorable carbuncle in our logo! At least I managed to get that beautiful blue color for the theme...
About this time, Lolae had joined the staff. The two of them set to work on creating the Aetherflow brand while I began researching and developing the organizational backbone for the project. Over the next couple of months, Lolae began to help breathe life into the project by creating our first website and working with Arya to design the logos. Our small staff began writing, taking screenshots, developing a podcast and throwing out piece ideas left and right! There is something quite unique and incredible about watching a brief thought start to blossom into more than you could have ever imagined!
With the project well underway, the values of Aetherflow had to be set, prioritized and protected within the team. These would be determined how we were to proceed throughout the development, growth, and future of Aetherflow. Above all, transparency became a strict focus. Not just within the team, but with the public as well. Obviously, there would be confidential information within the project, but anything that could be provided to the public would be. Financial reports, what donations would be spent on, and other information would be given, thus I set to work on our Patreon and the Guide to the Treatment of Funds. It was incredibly important to us that the Patrons know what they’re giving their money to and for.
Another top priority determined was the staff’s wellbeing. This value came into play during the decision of the frequency of our publications, as well as the deadlines set internally. So many things happen in real life and this is a volunteer project. In order to help maintain the lowest possible levels of stress for our staff, we came to the conclusion that a quarterly production would be the most beneficial. This would give our staff ample time to produce their work, and allow for any “outside interferences” to occur with minimal obstruction. In addition to the scheduling of the content, we would also ensure to make it a priority to recruit enough members that should one have to step away temporarily, the others could easily cover. However, we also wanted to maintain a close-knit team feeling, so a balance for the staff size must be maintained as well.
We officially went public on August 24, 2018, and were in awe at the reactions and support we received right off the bat! Support that we continue to have to this day and are ever appreciative of. Now that we’ve launched and are officially a year in, the one question I continuously get is “what is the overall goal of Aetherflow Media?” Our goal is to help foster and support this amazing community that helped foster and support us as we started this journey. Though we are still young and small for a community project, we hope that as we continue to build and grow we will be able to help other creators build and grow too.
Our desire it to be able to connect with the other content creators and work together to reach this goal. Our vision of helping to pour life and support into the XIV community is not a small one, and cannot be achieved alone. In an age where drama surfaces around every corner, we wish to help build a haven where members can express their creativity, nurture it, develop it, and grow with it. This is but one of the many reasons we put so much effort into collaboration opportunities, participating in charity and community events, and putting out our Community Newsletter to showcase the up and coming talents of Eorzea.
A community is so incredibly important to the lives of those in it. The support systems built within bring joy to people, help them cope with situations, and even saves lives. This is not something that should be shrugged away, undervalued, or underutilised. All it takes is one little voice to bring a smile to someone’s face on a rough day, and our goal is to be that voice.
If you would like to join us in being that voice, please feel free to hop into our Discord! We thank you for all of your help during this past year, and we look forward to continuing to work hard nurturing these relationships and this community.
